Conjugated dendrimers are an exciting class of materials that combine the advantages of molecular and polymeric materials with the potential to give superior performance in light-emitting diodes. They have well defined structures akin to molecular materials, but with the key advantage of having the solution processibility normally associated with polymers. Dendrimers consist of a core, dendrons, and surface groups. The choice of each of these components gives enormous control over the critical areas for device applications of film morphology and interfacial interactions. This proposal plans ro relate structural measurements on dendrimers to their photophysical and device properties in order to advance understanding of structure-property relations for organic semiconductors. We will use a battery of techniques including gradient diffusion NMR, DSC, U.V.-visible spec..roscopy, photoluminescence (PL), PL quantum yield, time resolved PL, LEDs, small angle X-ray diffraction, small angle neutron scattering and neutron reflection. The latter two techniques will be used to isolate different morphological features of the film, for which we will prepare compounds that have H/D exchange for enhanced clarity.
