Summary on Grant Application Form
The focus is upon the effect of stable stratification and background turbulence upon individual coherent turbulent rings. There are a number of unresolved issues for this case, including the effect of stratification upon isolated patches of turbulence, the impact of stratification and background trublence upon the long-term evolution of discrete vortical structures, and whether or not the ring leaves a characteristic signiture in the internal and/or surface gravity wave fields. Using Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation of a single tight-core vortex ring to address these fundamental issues, we aim to provide a set of detailed high-quality data and thereby provide a sound foundation for those who must answer the important design and engineering questions that are affected, in various contexts, by the behaviour of stably stratified turbulence. This project is also expected to benefit the many fields (such as civil aviation and remote/satellite sensing of the ocean) in which discrete vortical structures play an important role.
