Summary on Grant Application Form
BCTCS is the annual British Colloquium for Theoretical Computer Science, first held in 1985. Each year, the colloquium is held at a different university, and this is the first time the colloquium will be held at Stirling University. Traditionally PhD students have been partially funded to attend the colloquium (with stipends for registration and accommodation fees). This is seen as important since the colloquium is not a conference in the usual sense (restricted to a specialised area and with refereed proceedings), but rather a forum for interaction between researchers from varied disciplines in Theoretical Computer Science. In particular BCTCS allows PhD students to broaden their horizon and gain an insight into theoretical computer science areas that are possibly unrelated to their normal work. It also provides a forum for PhD students to present their research to the wider research community in a friendly environment. By supporting the view that PhD students are essential for the success of BCTCS, the event is targeted to provide the largest gain for PhD students by not adhering to the somewhat competitive environment provided by normal conferences.
