This 'Research Assistant Industrial Secondment' (RAIS) proposal will build on a recent EPSRC-funded project at the University of Cambridge that has focussed on the design and welding of joints in thermoplastic composites. The project, carried out in collaboration with Rolatube Technology Ltd., has developed the underlying technology to allow the longitudinal in a bistable tube, that can be flattened and compactly stowed on a reel before it is needed, to be welded when the pipe is deployed, forming a pipeline. This original project has been successful in two respects: it has shown that a successful joint can be formed, and has developed infra-red welding as a suitable welding technique.The RAIS will allow the Research Associate employed on the original project to work with Rolatube Technology Ltd. on the next stage of the commercial development of this technology. The Research Associate's expertise, built up during the research project, will feed into a project to develop a prototype 'welding machine', that would allow a bistable pipe to be welded as it is deployed and installed. If successful, the proposed machine will revolutionise the laying and repair of pipelines.
