Enolate-electrophile bond constructions are amongst the most efficient in organic synthesis. The aim of this research is to extend this type of bond-forming event by developing methodology that will allow chiral enolates to be generated under catalytic conditions using soft-enolisation techniques. We will investigate the structural requirements needed for efficient enolate generation and the variety of electrophiles that can be trapped.Specific areas for investigation are the synthesis of alpha, beta-diamino acids, Darzens and aza-Darzens reactions and direct enantioselective conjugate additions. The key feature of all the enolates we plan to employ is that they have the ability to allow an intramolecular trap following the key bond construction. This feature leads to the synthesis of a variety of highly functionalised heterocyclic systems that are extyremely useful building blocks for synthesis.
