This project is concerned primarily with fundamental aspects of the structure and reactivity of new classes of carbocations. The work is based on the recent isolation and structural characterisation of the first example of a thermally stable sec-alkyl cation. The polarisation of SnMe3 substituents proved to be an unexpectedly powerful means of stabilising carbocations. This work is intended, at a fundamental level, to explore the applicability and limitations of this stabilisation principle in the synthesis of new carbocations. Attempts will be made to extend this route to prim.-alkyl cations, as well as dications. As far as practicable the compounds will be structurally characterised. The potential of extending the synthetic principle to sec.-carbocations stabilised by other types of metals will be explored. It is expected that the chemistry will lead to new initiator systems for carbocationic polymerisations of isoalkenes. The influence on initiator efficiency and polymer structure will be determined.
