Summary on Grant Application Form
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) offer the prospect of clean, efficient generation of eletrical power to meet the needs of emission regulation in the near future. Before this can be achieved there are some severe practical obstacles to the wide scale adoption of this technology that need to be overcome. The commercialisation of the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell rlies upon the development of a robust durable cell that can be cheaply processed and is easily incorporated into a working stack. These requirements necessitate a mechanically robust, low cost cell that will operate at intermediate temperatures (500-600C). The aim of this project is to capitalise on the knowledge gained over the last three years at Imperial College in the production of SOFC electrolyte thick film layers to produce robust metal supported cells capable of producing 0.3 W cm-2 at an operating temperature of 550C.
