Summary on Grant Application Form
Geometries of boron clusters are commonly found as either open or closed cage deltahedra (triangular face polyhedra) depending on the cage electron counts. Here we look at geometries with a rare electron count intermediate to those found in systems with well-known closed and open geometries. We will use a variety of experimental and computational methods to determine the factors governing the stability of these species, and also to identify their structures. We will also investigate the role of conjugated bridging moieties on the delocalisation of the odd electron in paramagnetic, multiple carborane cage assemblies.
