Criteria for evaluating success fall into two categories: web site access statistics and statistics on public understanding.Two web site statistical criteria will be used to judge the project. Firstly, that the web site gains over 100 000 unique page visitors per year. [This is three times that of the current Motorsport Engineering and Management web site at Cranfield.] Secondly, that the web site gains over 30 000 unique visitors per year from the UK. The statistics will be evaluated using the Webtrends software package, which is already in placeHigh unique visitor numbers do not necessarily correlate with an increase in public awareness. Awareness will be assessed using the criterion of increased public understanding. To quantitatively evaluate improvements in public understanding, members of the public will be invited to fill in a 'before' and 'after' multiple choice questionnaire to evaluate their understanding of the science engineering and technology underpinning motorsport. An increase of 25% between 'before' and 'after' responses will be used as the criteria for success of the project.. The web form will require identification of the respondent's age group, sex and age at which they left formal education, to give further demographic information on the use of the site and on the improvements in understanding. In order to influence people to take the time to fill in the form, there will be a yearly prize for best answer - mediated by age - sponsored by Williams Fl. This form could be filled in at any stage of browsing the web site, which will not be hierarchical in nature. The existence of the prize should also encourage further browsing of the site, in order to be able to complete the form's questions.
