|
One of the most rapidly developing aspects of engineering is photonics. Photonics research and the subsequent embodiment of that research in terms of a photonics industry, has impact on all of our everyday lives whether it be communication technologies, home entertainment through to advanced manufacturing techniques. Research in photonics is a major part of the science based research in the UK, crossing discipline boundaries into the lifesciences, engineering, chemistry, manufacturing, materials and ICT. The photonics industry is a major employer throughout the UK and even in Scotland alone this industry has a turnover in excess of 550M per annum. Despite this, the public perception of photonics and the opportunities it offers is very low. The aim of this project is to carry out a feasibility study to establish whether a full project can be undertaken to raise the awareness, in a key group of decision-makers and influencers, of the impact and importance that photonics has in their business and in their private lives. The target audience is a group of travellers on the early morning flight from Glasgow to Heathrow - the 06:30 shuttle.
