Summary on Grant Application Form
We aim to investigate the interaction between reaction-diffusion phenomena and pure hydrodynamic instabilities in thin film and porous media flows. In such systems, hydrodynamic perturbations of the phase boundary generate local convective fluxes which affect the reaction macrokinetics as well as interfacial heat and mass transport. This coupling leads to self-organisation processes associated with a specific dissipative pattern formation of chemohydrodynamic nature. The interfacial reactions are accompanied by the formation of a variety of distinctive patterns (solitary waves, fingers and plumes) which lead to efficient mixing which in turn can strongly accelerate the reactions. Thus, understanding of the hydrodynamics of such systems offers a possibility to control the reaction rates. Furthermore, the classes of systems to be analysed by the proposed research can serve as models for the study of self-sustained dynamics.
