This proposal is concerned with the establishment of a Usability Task force in order to support the e-Science Core programme. Usability Issues are emerging as a key component in delivering viable eScience applications to the scientific community and for the deployment of future Grid applications. The initial concerns of the computer scientists and engineers developing the grid are to devise a robust technological infrastructure capable of processing vast amounts of data at high speed. This presents considerable technical challenges but the developments, in the UK for example under the E-Science programme, arewell underway. As we move beyond the development of the basic grid infrastructure there are still considerable challenges to be met if grid technologies are to deliver their maximum benefits to wide constituencies of potential users. Many of these are issues of use and require a focus on usability concerns. Understanding the usability concerns associated with the development and deployment of an eScience infrastructure and feeding this into the design of tools for resource allocation and management, is clearly an important role which needs to be undertaken at this moment in time. This proposal seeks support for the formation of a usability Task force for the UK eScience programme that will coordinate usability activities and provide advice for the UK eScience community on broad usability issues.
