This application is for a Platform grant to underpin our research into the nature of self-assembled amphiphilic microstructures: lyotropic liquid crystals, surfactants, lipid membranes, block copolymers and liquid crystals. Materials based on such structures have wide-ranging importance, from biomimetic materials, surfactants and foodstuffs, advanced materials, to biomembranes, enhanced medical imaging, and templating applications. In order to use and manipulate these materials effectively, a detailed understanding of their structure, ordering and dynamics, over lengthscales ranging from 1 nanometre to 1 micron, and timescales from microseconds to minutes, is required. Both the equilibrium and the non-equilibrium behaviour need to be studied, as the latter is usually encountered during processing or functioning conditions.We plan to use a combination of experimental methods, primarily X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR, but also encompassing techniques such as polarising microscopy, calorimetry and electron microscopy, to study the structure, ordering and dynamics of a wide range of self-assembling materials, under both equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium conditions.
