Summary on Grant Application Form
Quantitative approaches to the static analysis of programs are relatively new and have mainly focussed on probabilistic questions. The proposers have had considerable success in applying probabilistic techniques to the analysis of security properties. Our early work was applied to a simple concurrent constraint language but recently we have succeeded in developing a significant generalisation to probabilistic transition systems. In this project we propose to investigate the role of resources in computing; this will involve a further significant development of our work with a particular emphasis on quantitative techniques. We are interested in both the economics of resource use and the security of resources. These two interests are represented in our programme of work. From an economics perspective we will explore resource consumption, resource coordination and information costing and optimisation. From the security perspective we will explore resource leakage, information theory and distributed security. The proposed research is relatively long-term but might be expected to have an impact on sectors of industry where security issues are important, such as in insurance and smart cards.
