There is currently an acute need for a national network comprising academics and practitioners involved in Sustainable (Urban) Drainage Systems (SUDS). National emphasis on more sustainable urban water solutions, as supported by EPSRC's Sustainable Urban Environment (SUE) initiative and the WaND consortium (Water Cycle Management for New Developments) dictate that this area needs immediate consideration and that a coherent approach should be taken to address the relevant issues. A national SUDS Network will also complement and inform other networks of national importance such as the EPSRC/DEFRA consortia on Flood Management and the EPSRC/UKCIP work on adapting to Climate Change. This network will build on the established links between industry and Coventry University together with the Scottish Universities' SUDS monitoring programme centred on the University of Abertay Dundee.The SUDS Network will facilitate vital communication between geographically dispersed groups of researchers and practitioners concerning best practice, design-code refinement and the development of design procedures. Practitioners are now required by local authorities/ environmental regulators, to incorporate quantity-quality-habitat aspects into their designs. In the light of this recent policy-change it is essential that:0 existing expertise relating to SUDS is shared between practitioners0 a coherent SUDS research agenda is developed on a UK-wide collaborative basis to assist and inform decision making processes 0 high quality research proposals are brought forward to the research councils and for EU 6th Framework bids0 drainage best management practices are adopted and implemented at the practitioner level to promote more sustainable urban environments in line with the sustainable cities programme0 the academic community is able to update its current teaching in line with the changes to accepted principles relating to source control and water management in urban settings0 a central location / web location is provided where all elements of the SUDSnet program can be brought into daily use/reference 0 progress of the SUDSnet programme is drawn up and monitored to achieve the above fundamental aims
