Summary on Grant Application Form
Alloys with a very small grain size (<1 micrometre) are currently being developed by processing routes involving deformation to large strains. Such materials are inherently unstable and this project will investigate some fundamental aspects of the instability of micron-scale grains and subgrains.- Grain instability in single-phase and two-phase aluminium alloys will be investigated by controlled annealing of heavily deformed polycrystals produced fin Sydney.- Subgrain instability and discontinuous subgrain growth will be investigated in deformed aluminium and copper single crystals prepared in Sydney. The main investigative method will be high resolution EBSD using Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscopes equipped for Electron Backscatter Diffraction. Both post moretem examination and in-situ annealing will be carried out.
