China is worth particular attention because of her position in world science. The purpose of this application is to develop collaborations with scientists and engineers at Sichuan (top 12 in more than 1000 Chinese universities) and Tongji (top 24) Universities in China. The group lead by Professor Yuzhong Wang in the College of Chemistry at Sichuan University has carried out the research of biodegradable materials from renewable resources for more than 7 years. There is a Key National Laboratory for degradable and flame-retardant polymer materials at Sichuan University. Their research on biodegradable materials from renewable resources has been strongly supported by Chinese government. IPTME has carried out the research into polymer-organoclay nanocomposites for several years. Recently, starch-organoclay nanocomposite powder has been prepared successfully by means of solid-solid wetting method in IPTMM. The achievement gives us a chance to develop starch-organoclay nanocomposites for improving water resistance and mechanical properties. It is expected to build up the collaboration with Professor Wang's group to develop novel biodegradable nanocomposite materials from renewable resources with improved water resistance and mechanical properties, and to develop novel flame-retarded polymer materials.The research on biomaterials for medical applications lead by Professor Guojian Wang has been carried out in the College of Materials at Tongji University. They have been looking for biomaterials with lower permeability to air and water, long service life and excellent mechanical properties for the development of artificial bladders. The Medical School at Tongji University, which is the best one of medical schools in China, is one of their collaborators. We wish to collaborate with Professor Wang's group to develop artificial heats and bladders. These facilities in the Medical School could be used for our biomaterials testing. During the visit, it is excepted that the collaborations with Sichuan and Tongji Universities of China can be established.
