Given the appeal of both Biochips and Optical Manipulations (evidenced by ca. 1000 publications in the subjects in the last few years), it is surprising how few attempts have been made to bring together the two technologies in order to develop new fields of application. In this application We seek to develop a range of lab-on-chip devices driven and interrogated by light beams. Specifically, holographic optical tweezers will drive micro-pumps and valves, create micro-array traps for particle sorting and fluorescence microscopy. A light beam will therefore act both as an integrative technology (driving fluidics and scheduling functionality) as well as the interrogation tool (sensing and sorting cells upon the basis of biological or optical activity).
