The purpose of this proposal is to seek EPSRC support for a five-week research visit to the Department of Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde by Dr Yvonne Stokes, Lecturer in Applied Mathematics, University of Adelaide, Australia from mid-September to mid-October 2003. During her visit the proposed Visiting Fellow (VF) will collaborate with the proposers on the analysis of free-surface flow in helically wound channels. Specifically the proposed collaborators will seek to apply the proposers' internationally acknowledged expertise in the mathematical modelling and analysis of thin-film flows to bring new insight to this practically important problem.During her visit the proposed VF will also interact with the wider UK academic community by participating in a conference on free-boundary problems in fluid mechanics at the University of Nottingham.The proposed VF is a highly regarded researcher who is earning a growing reputation in the numerical analysis of industrially important fluid flows. Dr Stokes has extensive experience in the numerical simulation of free-surface flow in helically wound channels, and is seeking to broaden her knowledge of the asymptotic analytical methods used by the proposers. It is hoped that this relatively short visit will be the beginning of a longer-term collaboration.
