Summary on Grant Application Form
Interest in urban meteorology is growing in line with increasing urbanization of the world's population and consequent concern about the health effects of pollution. The atmosphere at pedestrian level is controlled by mixing and transport of heat and pollution away from their sources within the urban canopy, i.e. the buildings and the air between them. Wind transports pollutants and heat through the urban canopy until turbulent mixing with the air above effectively ventilates the streets. Understanding and quantifying turbulent ventilation of urban areas is crucial to any prediction of urban climate or air quality. Observations in a real urban environment depend on many factors - street layout, upstream terrain, windspeed - and are often specific to the immediate location, i.e. they can only tell us about ventilation of one particular street. Simulating flow over model urban areas in windtunnels allows us to separate out the influences and fully understand mixing and transport. This research aims to quantify turbulent ventilation, understand the processes controlling it, and develop a novel wind tunnel measurement technique which has application to areas other than urban meteorology.
