Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to apply and develop the techniques of adaptive optics to the challenging domain of X-ray optics. Adaptive optics have revolutionised our use of optical systems and X-ray adaptive techniques have the potential to delivery very high resolution systems (focus spots below <1 um, imaging resolutions 1 arc second) they also permit scanning or image optimisation in different parts of the field of view. The proposed research will provide experimental proof of concept for the production of grazing incident conic section adaptive X-ray focusing optics and will undertake a study that will address the detailed design and fabrication of full nested conic grazing incidence adaptive X-ray focusing systems for use in biomedicine, X-ray microscopy, microprocessor fabrication and astronomical telescopes. The proposed programme of work will also include collaboration building in preparation to submitting a full Basic Technology bid.
