We propose to develop a new sensitive low cost mass balance that can be used in an aqueous environment by using an electronic technique to control the Q of an array of small micrornachined resonators. The array will be sensitised to specific species through the use of chemical coatings as outlined in the case for support. The application of this array to pollution monitoring of gases and particles will revolutionise the science of environmental monitoring providing a much better understanding of the basic science of pollution movement in the bulk environment. The development of a resonant mass balance capable of operating in an aqueous environment is to the best of our knowledge is new as is the application of dense arrays of sensor to provide high spatial resolution monitoring of pollutants. Both of these aspects of the project will provide challenging technological and scientific developments.
