Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of the research is to perform a three-year investigation into the potential of exploiting certain fundamental properties of biomedical sources, such as their linear and nonlinear predictability, smoothness, non-negativity and sparseness, within blind source extraction, with application to noninvasive processing of brain electrical and magnetic signals. The study also focuses on problems of underdetermined (more sources than sensors) mixtures and sparse sources. The design and analysis of architectures and algorithms that are well suited for nonlinear and nonstationary sources together with a nonlinear and time varying mixing system is the major thrust of the proposal. To this end, robustness of the algorithms to permutations in the parameters of the extraction system and the heteroscedastic additive noise will be investigated. Extraction of biomedical signals of interest, such as evoked potentials in mental tasks, from noisy multichannel recordings of brain signals will be undertaken, with the aim of aiding the understanding of certain information processing mechanisms within the brain. This project will show whether applying some fundamental properties of signals in BSE has advantages over existing methods, for complex temporally and spatially correlated sources.
