Summary on Grant Application Form
Ferroelectromagnets (FEM) are one example of a multiferroic system with the potential for combining a number of interesting functionalities in a single material. The proposed work for the visiting fellowship is to investigate novel FEM device materials. YMn03 shows a combination of antiferromagnetism and ferroelectricity and it has recently been demonstrated that the electric and magnetic order parameters are fundamentally coupled in this material. The aim of this programme is to explore the growth of a variety of known and candidate FEM materials in thin film form. This work will take advantage of the established facilities for high quality thin film growth in Cambridge and Dr. Dho's experience in measurements of complex magnetic oxides. The work will concentrate on thin film studies so that we can eliminate grain boundary effects which hamper bulk studies. Thin films are also of immediate interest for device applications.
