|
The determination of the structure of a free Lie algebra regarded as a module for a group of graded algebra automorphisms is a classical problem on the borderline of the theory of Lie algebras and representation theory of groups. In the classical case where the characteristic of the ground field is zero, this problem was solved in the 1940's. Over the past 10 years there has been considerable progress in the study of modular Lie representations. This progress, however, is restricted to the case where the p-Sylow subgroup of the acting group is cyclic. The project is aimed at investigating modular Lie representations of groups with non-cyclic p-Sylow subgroup.The applicant will be eligible for study leave in the first semester of the 2004/2005 acedemic year. The proposal is to spend this semester at the Australian National University in Canberra, and to engage there in collaborative work with Dr L G Kovacs on the proposed project.
