Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed study is to investigate methods of realising a new electron microscope cathode based on a carbon nanotube (CNT) technology. The new cathode will have superior characteristics to any existing cathode including the latest technology in field emission sources. The proposed method is to grow a single CNT on both round and flat end-form single crystal tungsten emitters of the type currently in use for Schottky emitters. The investigation will make use of established techniques at the University of Cambridge in growing CNT in a PECVD reactor, and at York for the control growth of a flat end-formed emitters. However, crucial to these investigations also is the use of a newly developed pre-aligned electron microscope module comprising the tungsten filament, emitter, a suppressor and extractor electrodes. The electron optical parameters of the new cathode will be measured to establish its suitability as a cathode for high resolution and high beam current electron probe applications at various vacuum conditions. The lessons learned in this investigation will be of benefit to electron microscopy industry and users and also in other research areas including flat panel display technology and parallel beam lithography.
