This project will initially be concerned with the synthesis of a variety of achiral isoxazolidines and pyrazolidines and an investigation of their reactivity in iminium ion catalysed organic transformations. In parallel to this work we will also use ab-initio and DFT methods to develop a fundamental understanding on the origins of the alpha-effect in these systems with the goal of developing the bench mark for catalyst loading and reaction rate for iminium ion accelerated organic transformations. From our initial results we will optimise our structures with respect to the alpha heteroatom and ringsubstituent on the catalysts.We will then go on to use our findings through a combination of theoretical and synthetic studies to develop asymmetric catalysts capable of iminium ion catalysis. These studies will particularly focus on mechanistic and kinetic studies on iminium ion formation, the effects of different substituents within the catalyst structure and the reactivity of the catalysts within the Diels-Alder, conjugate addition, aldol and Mannich reactions.The work will culminate in a final investigation into novel molecular architectures capable of accelerating the Baylis-Hillman reaction.
