Atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) and nitroxide mediated polymerisation (NMP) have shown the strength of living radical polymerisation to produce well-defined polymeric architectures with an almost unlimited amount of functionalities. Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation is the newest of the living radical polymerisation processes and appears as the most powerful: This technique does not require any catalyst, is efficient with a wide range of vinyl monomers and can be undertaken with little modifications of the classic free radical polymerisationprocess, making it the system of choice for industrial applications. The principle of polymerisation is however not fully understood and needs to be further studied. This research work proposes to investigate the polymerisation process via various spectroscopic means (ESR, NMR and UV) in order to clarify the mechanism of polymerisation. The direct application of this project will be the optimisation of the RAFT system to build polymeric structures for application in drug / DNA I RNA delivery.
