Rough surface scattering problems arise in a variety of contexts, for example in radar scattering by sea and ground surfaces or within diffractive optical elements through design or manufacturing imperfections. Finite element methods for these problems are poorly developed and less well understood. The proposed research is concerned with developing suitable weak formulations for discretisation, the design and analysis of finite element methods, with attention to the dependence of stability constants on the wavenumber and avoidance of pollution errors, and the design of effective iterative solvers, including domain decomposition based preconditioners. Outputs from the project will include finite element software, based on the theoretical results of the project, which will be tested for efficiency and accuracy against existing integral-equation based software. The analysis carried out will focus firmly on rough surface scattering problems, but it is expected that the ideas and results obtained will be relevant to time harmonic wave problems more generally, particularly to problems of propagation in waveguides. The funding requested is largely to support Prof Peter Monk, an expert on finite element methods for Helmholtz and Maxwell problems, as visitor to Brunei.
