Summary on Grant Application Form
Turbulent flows at a free surface may be seen to form 'scars' at which the flow descends from the free surface. These scars are likely to be the most important aspect of such a flow field for heat and mass transfer properties through the free surface, and may be of special signficance for the turbulence since they are a major source of vorticity input from a non-splashing surface. Initial work on EPSRC Grant Strong turbulence at a free surface [GR/R85075/01 and GR/R85068/01] has identified scars as one of a number of 'standard flows' to be investigated. This portion of that much wider study is well suited to study by a Ph.D. student, with a good mathematical background. The study will start from laminar flow examples where existing theoretical results can be extended. Then, as detailed experimental results from Southampton University become available, they will guide the more difficult study of turbulent flows. This aspect of the work is completely new but is related to another 'standard flow', the hydraulic jump. Thus scars can also form a source of turbulence at the free surface. Their relative ubiquity on surfaces disturbed by turbulence indicates their importance.
