Summary on Grant Application Form
Mathematical studies of the Navier-Stokes equations suggest that turbulent flow can be fully described with a finite number of the so-called master modes. W e plan to calulate these modes numerically and compare the flow field given by the master modes only with the complete flow field. The flow features which are present in both fields can be expected to be of major importance. The specific features of interest are the organised structures, especially the near-wall streaks, due to their importance for regeneration of turbulence energy. Determining which structures are primary and which are secondary will allow to concentrate further research on the more important primary structures.Calculations of the master modes history will also provide a material for studies of turbulence as a dynamical system. Estimates of the number of determinig modes will allow to verity various theoretical predictions for the dimension of the Navier-Stokes attractor.
