Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks Platform grant funding for the Photonic Communications Research Group at Cambridge University. The group, whose key members moved from Bristol University in October 2001, has grown greatly and now numbers in excess of 30 members. The aim of the group is to research at the interface between systems and components. This arises because of the realisation that if photonic systems are to progress in the coming years, they must allow for greater complexity and hence technologies must be devised providing greater levels of component integration. The proposed work therefore will study new hybrid functional photonic integration schemes involving glass, III-V semiconductors (including well and dot materials), polymer and carbon nanotube materials. These schemes not only have the potential of allowing a range of components to be readily integrated, but are also in the main suitable for mass deployment. Schemes for structural integration including the use of photonic crystals will also be used. The project will focus on developing new integrated sub-systems for unified communication systems (RF and datacom), computer networks using routers suitable for massdeployment, and ultrafast systems with enhanced functionality (such as all-optical error correction), suitable also for related applications in life sciences.
