Summary on Grant Application Form
This Portfolio Partnership Award consolidates existing research projects and incorporates new projects into a five year programme in tissue regeneration and replacement.(1) In the area of Tissue Replacement current projects on wear, wear debris, functional biocompatibility and osteolytic potential will be extended through enhanced surface engineering solutions for joint replacement. We will investigate biocompatibility of recently discovered nanometre size wear particles. Additionally, new minimally invasive surface replacement therapies and surface replacement approaches will be investigated for joint repair(2) Tissue Regeneration - In the area of Tissue Regeneration current project on ultrasonic modification of tissue matrices for enhanced recellularisation and studies of self assembling peptide gels for articular cartilage therapies will be extended. We will also investigate the use of functional bioreactor systems for biomechanically active tissue regeneration in vitro. Additionally, in vitro guided mesenchymal stem cell differentiation will be studied. Soft tissue applications will include heart valves, ligaments, tendons, pericardium and surgical particles.
