|
Complex systems are those in which local interactions between many simple elements give rise to complex behaviour at the level of the whole system. Understanding these systems is a challenge faced by many different scientific disciplines, from neuroscience and ecology to linguistics and geography. The aim of this project is to bring together internationally leading UK researchers from a range of relevant scientific disciplines to meet and collaborate with experts in appropriate computational and mathematical modelling methodologies, in order to achieve a step change in our understanding of the way in which complex networks underlie and influence the behaviour of real-world complex systems. What unites this diverse group of researchers is thus a focus on the use of simple models to study complex networks. The proposed project will achieve its aims through holding a series of focused research workshops and smaller one-on-one meetings that will allow ideas and expertise to be developed and shared. This process will be managed towards the generation of around five well-specified inter- and multidisciplinary complex networks research proposals, which will be submitted to the EPSRC 12 months into the cluster's lifespan.
