This experimental study will improve understanding of wake vortices and make use of this to devise methods of weakening them. It will be carried out by a small team of researchers in the departments of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics. The main purpose is to develop methods that will allow control of vortex strength from models and to provide the understanding required to allow extrapolation to flight and thereby make possible reduction in spacing between aircraft with increase in airport capacity. The research will benefit from current and past work at Imperial College and will begin by quantifying wake vortices as a function of wing geometry and flow conditions. It will then extend previous findings to develop methods of control based on steady and unsteady jets from wing tips to quantify the extent to which these modify wake vortices from a selection wing configurations. A similar investigation of solid and pneumatic vortex generators will extend previous findings. Near and intermediate field measurements will be obtained in wind tunnels and augmented by far field studies in a hydraulic towing tank. Experiments will involve traditional techniques and extensive use of hot-wires and particle image and Doppler-global velocimetry.
