Summary on Grant Application Form
Current software debuggers are stretched by the challenges of developing e-Science applications and infrastructures. At best, today's tools allow debugging of single-machine systems or those built over a homogeneous middleware. We believe that there is a pressing need for supporting more general distributed computing environments (e.g. those comprising a range of different software systems) and for much larger scale deployments (e.g. those using thousands of machines). In this project we intend to pursue two related strands of research toward the goals that we have set. The first strand focuses on system-wide debugging of distributed software. It is aimed at systems of a moderate size (involving, say, up to half a dozen processes). It proceeds by virtualizing the resources used, providing a system-wide view encompassing network links in addition to processes. The second strand focuses on debugging larger systems of tens, hundreds or thousands of processes for which system-wide co-ordination is impractical. It proceeds by logging small amounts of information at each node and combining this for analysis to provide information about faults.
