The potential of electric-field induced second-harmonic generation (EFISH) as a diagnostic in Si devices remains largely unexploited. The project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of using EFISH for accurate non-invasive probing of electrical waveforms present within Si ICs. EFISH is particularly relevant to modem CMOS ICs because the use of flip-chip packaging prevents direct electrical-contact probing of a chip and thererfore makes through-substrate optical probing of on-chip waveforms attractive. Optical methods are also desirable because they place no capacitive or inductive loading on the circuit and have bandwidths far exceeding those of electrical transmission lines.In the project we will use a specially designed femtosecond confocal microscope to attempt to record EFISH signals from Si devices in a non-invasive way for the first time. We will being with simple devices such as photodiodes and transistors and ultimately aim to detectEFISH signals from a CMOS integrated circuit.
