Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will analyse the possibilities of quantum computation and quantum communications using 1 D magnets (spin chains) and allied systems. Many available real magnets and many simulated condensed matter systems are spin chains. Typically, in these systems, interactions cannot be turned on and off. Preliminary studies (by myself and collaborators) have indicated that one can exploit certain spin chains for quantum computation and as channels for quantum communication. The aim of the current project is to generalize and extend these results towards the goal of physical realization. Quantum computation with chains of spin-clusters and 2D spin systems will be studied. On the other hand, quantum communications will be studied using a variety of spin systems of novel geometries, as well as using other analytically solvable condensed matter systems such as the one dimensional Hubbard model. We will also study schemes to entangle (correlate quantum-mechanically) propagating excitations in spin chains and establish how to use them for quantum communications.
