Summary on Grant Application Form
The perception of distance is critical in human vision. It enables us to interact with and avoid objects, and to interpret the structure of the environment around us. In principle, binocular vision can provide information about distance from a combination of vergence (the angle between the left eye, target object and right eye) and binocular disparity (the small differences between right and left eye images). In practice, we know little about whether this information can actually be used by the human visual system. In this proposal we describe a series of experiments that are aimed at a simple model of binocular distance perception and extending it to situations in which other sources of distance information (e.g. size, perceptive) are also available. The model will be useful for basic visual scientists aiming to understand the human visual system and how it allows us to interact with the world. It will also have potential application in the fields of virtual reality, tele-operations, and computer vision.
