Summary on Grant Application Form
Experimental work is in progress at UMIST on the effects of reduced air density on the electrical breakdown of air; emphasis is given to work at elevated temperatures. Interpretation and projections for future work would be strengthened by provision of a Visiting Fellowship Grant for Professor M. AbdelSalam of Assiut University, Egypt. The Fellow would engage in theoretical modelling in two 2 1/2 month summer vacation visits to UMIST. Topics covered would include: (i) onset conditions for critical avalanche and streamer formation to include emphasis on temperature effects on ionisation and transport coefficients, with comparison with experimental results already obtained; (ii) predictive modelling of charge injection and volt-ampere characteristics in corona to be calculated as a function of air density, with particular reference to the expected changes in streamer/glow pre-discharges and resulting changes in sparkover voltage; (iii) conditions for leader inception will be investigated as a function of air density.
