Summary on Grant Application Form
To investigate novel techniqued of integrating high performance millimetre-wave antennas with multi-chip module technology. Compared with previous work in this area, the novelty of the approach is that a completely new design philosophy will be used with optimum techniques used right from the GaAs/Silicon/InP integrated circuit to the mechanical housing/radome unit. An optimum approach will be investigated which integrates the transceiver circuitry and high performance antenna with simple low cost assembly techniques. In this way, the techniques will be suitable for mass consumer markets, such as vehicular systems and telematics transceivers, radio-over-fibre and 4G networks and broadband wireless LANs. Electromagnetic (quasi-optical) interfaces between the chip and antenna will be investigated, with the aim of overcoming the restictions of conventional assembly techniques for future generations of systems.
