|
This application is for a travel grant to support the investigator while he is on sabbatical in Japan, from July-Dec 2003, under the overseas travel grant scheme. Because a number of projects are currently at a quite successful stage generating key publications, and laying the foundations for future directions within nanotechnology, the investigator is under some pressure to present this work at international conferences in Europe and the USA in the second half of 2003, as well as around Japan. This outreach activity is now considered more and more important, since the only way for one's work to be visible to a wider community (as this interdisciplinary work addresses) and for the ideas to become current, is to give effective invited and plenary talks. The applicant is well known for this sort of wide-ranging talk, and believes this activity is an important part of projecting the UK's strength in this highly competitive area. At the same time, the investigator intends to gain a fair knowledge of the current state of NanoMaterials research in Japan and the Far East.
