Summary on Grant Application Form
A novel technique is proposed here that applies smart antenna technology to the downlink of wireless networks employing Hierarchical Cell Structures (HCS). The idea is to use smart antennas installed at macrocell base stations to obtain extra capacity for W-CDMA systems by adding microcell hotspot base stations operating in the same frequency band of an already present continuous macrocell layer. In this scheme, IP-based services are offered to local mobile stations, using packet switched transmission without additional bandwidth; i.e. using the same frequency band for both the hotspot and macrocell. This reuse of frequency will increase the capacity and the spectral efficiency of the network as well as releasing frequency allocations that would otherwise be used to serve microcells for other spectrum requirements. This has particular application to the standardisation process of UMTS phase2 where significant enhancements to the existing UMTS standard are sought. A full description is now given. Here we attempt to use all the characteristics of the user (mobility, service and location) to increase the isolation between macrocells and microcells operating in the same frequency band. In particular, the deployment of smart antennas on the downlink will be explored and attention will be given to inter-layer interference reduction as well as the sensitivity to smart antenna operation on the downlink of FDD networks and associated beamforming algorithms. It is believed that the merging of these technologies will provide a significant step towards addressing the perceived demand of multimedia
