Summary on Grant Application Form
The central theme of the proposed work is that molecular wrapping of proteins such as myoglobin can be achieved using organo-functionalized oligomers of stable inorganic frameworks such as exfoliated nanoclusters of synthetic magnesium (organo)phyllosilicates. We intend to produce structurally and functionally intact wrapped protein molecules in the form of dispersed nanoparticles or nanostructured arrays and thin films with enhanced thermal stability. We aim to demonstrate and explore the nanotechnological potential of wrapped biomolecules through a focused study using archetypal proteins with functions such as oxygen binding, electron transport and enzyme catalysis.
