Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to develop a new, microscopically based 'local moment approach' to a major and longstanding problem: lanthanide- or actinidebased alloy materials whose properties are determined both by strong, local coulomb interactions and substitutional disorder. Building upon, but going well beyond, recent work that demonstrates the veracity of the basic approach within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory, we will study paramagnetic phases of the disordered, periodic Anderson lattice model; focusing in particular on dynamical properties that are both central to experiment and the most difficult to handle theoretically. The work proposed will lead to a comprehensive description of single-particle dynamics, transport and optical properties: (a) on all relevant energy and temperature scales; (b) for the full physical range of model parameters, but with a natural emphasis on the strongly correlated, heavy electron regime; (c) from the concentrated lattice through to the dilute 'single impurity' limit, and (d) encompassing both heavy fermion and Kondo insulating systems. We seek in addition, by exploiting in particular the scaling behaviour inherent to strong coupling, to make direct, unforced comparison to experiments on a range of materials.
