The aims of the project are to provide a discussion forum with the following objectives.: identification of the implications of triple junctions in controlling boundary mobility, and strength, particularly in nanophase materials; understanding of the electronic bonding across boundaries as a function of boundary character; quantification of grain boundary segregation, diffusion, corrosion, and precipitation kinetics as a function of boundary, and especially triple junction structure; understanding of the interaction of grain boundaries with neutron irradiation; development of improved high resolution microanalytical, microcrystallographic, and computational techniques for the study of grain boundaries. The work will be completed in the various laboratories of the network under separate financial arrangements, but it will only be successful if continued regular progress, planning, and exchange visits are made between the network participants. The existing network is in the process of making a large (12 MEuros) Network of Excellence application, based on similar themes, to the EC. A select workshop, five sub-group meetings, and an open international meeting will be arranged. A website has been created. This application addresses the need to finance these activities and events. The project will extend initially over a further three years to supplement the activities of the earlier successful network on this subject. and will be co-ordinated again by Professor R.G. Faulkner.
