Summary on Grant Application Form
High performance tuneable filters are notoriously difficult to implement at millimetre-wave frequencies. This research programme will focus on investigating a range of techniques that can be adopted to realise such filters, using novel electrostatically-actuated distributed-element coupled lines. Within the proposed two-year research programme, three work packages will be investigated, to realise compact and high performance millimetre-wave tuneable filters: low-loss micromachined transmission lines, using the proposed MAMS line technology; novel MEMS distributed-element millimetre-wave tuneable filters; high performance MEMS filters. The last package will encorporate advanced techniques that will include creating vertical ground strips to reduce insertion loss & provide series feedback capacitance (to extend the impedance tuning range) for electrostatic actuation and exploiting orthogonal electrostatic actuation to provide frequency tuning. Measured results from demonstrators associated with each work package will be compared and contrasted with those using non-micromachined technology.
