We propose to develop a new area of cluster chemistry - supraicosahedral carboranes - following our successful synthesis of the first 13-vertex carborane by reduction then capitation of a tethered 12-vertex carborane. We propose to synthesise further, larger, supraicosahedral carboranes (by successive reduction/capitation steps), fully characterising them spectroscopically and crystallographically. For the 13-vertex species tethering is necessary to prevent spontaneous degradation, but calculations suggest that larger carboranes (e.g. with 16 or 17 vertices) could be stable without tethers. Therefore we will also develop carboranes with removable tethers, thereby allowing us to study aspects such as C atom isomerisation in these larger species. At the same time we will investigate several alternatives to tethering as replacement strategies for the kinetic stabilisation of supraicosahedral carboranes.
