How different are two natural visual images? Models have been developed, based on properties of neurons in primate visual systems, that aim to predict the magnitude of the perceived differences between two images. However, the basis of these models is questionable and little is known about the validity of the predictions made. Furthermore, the models assume that vision is passively directed at all parts of each scene simultaneously, rather than requiring the process of active scanning which an actual comparison involves. We wish to refine our existing model of visual difference prediction by (a) refining its operation using natural-image stimuli; (b) validating its predictions by measuring the perceived difference between natural images with a variety of psychophysical procedures on human observers; (c) learning about deviations between predicted and actual human performance, and relating these to ecological invariants within the images; (d) traning a neural network to take account of these discrepancies, thus creating the beginnings of a high-level model; and (e) extending the model to deal with situations in which there is a target in an unknown location, thus providing an initial model of visual search in complex scenes.
