Professor Roher's (GR) group has designed and implemented a semi-automated method to measure all five macroscopic degrees of freedom in polycrystals via a combination of SEM imaging, electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) and serial sectioning. So far the tool has been used on magnesia and other ceramics. Professor Randle's (VR) group has expertise in the measurement of grain boundary plane crystallography in metallic materials, and the effect of the boundary plane distribution on interface properties. Bringing the expertise of the two groups together will allow the GR method to be adapted and extended to encompass twin-bearing materials such as nickel alloys. Subsequently the role of the grain boundary plane crystallography (where boundaries are divided into planar segments) on properties will be addressed, and particularly its role in grain boundary engineering. These are the topics which will be discussed via the International Travel Grant, with a view to setting up a collaboration to achieve the aims. Considerable technical challeneges are involved in adapting the procedure for twin-bearing materials. However, when achieved, the new approach to grain boundary characterisation will herald a major advance in the understanding of grain boundary structure/property relationships in metals.
